.:: PRESERVING YOUR INVESTMENT ::.
- Why is timber treatment important?
Non-durable timber species, such as pine, may be severely degraded and even destroyed beyond repair by wood rotting fungi, wood borers and termites within a relatively short span of time, if not properly treated.
Wood preservation, i.e. the correct chemical treatment of timber can significantly prolong the useful life of timber, if not indefinitely.
- What is wood preservation?
Wood preservation means the permanent protection of timber by proper impregnation with chemical substances (wood preservatives), rendering it unsuitable as a food source for wood destroying organisms such as wood degrading fungi and insects.
- How can timber be treated effectively?
Timber should be treated with an SABS approved wood preservative, suitable for the particular end-use and applied by an appropriate treatment method/process that will ensure achievement of the active ingredient retention and penetration levels required.
(For more details the SABS Code of Practice 05 can be consulted).
- Why is TOPRO 94 the correct choice?
TOPRO 94 is a borate (boron-based) product, the only wood preservative compound that can be applied to green (wet) or semi-dried timber and ensure that apart from the retention, the penetration depth of the active ingredient is also achieved through diffusion.
When using green timber construction, such as in the case of log homes, this is the only choice for preserving your investment.

1. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
TOPRO 94 is a water-soluble borate wood preservative powder for permanent protection of timber for non-ground contact use against wood decay fungi, wood boring insects and drywood termites.
The boron active ingredient used in TOPRO 94 is a well-known wood preservative compound of low mammalian toxicity and which is regarded as environmentally acceptable whilst providing wide-spectrum protection to wood against insect and fungal attack. It is therefore a recognized wood preservative in both the local and international markets.
2. TREATMENT REQUIREMENTS
A minimum active ingredient retention level of 5kg boric acid equivalent (b.a.e.) per m3, full sapwood penetration of sawn structural timber and a minimum penetration depth of 20mm case of pine poles and 13mm in the case of gum poles are required for timber treatment in accordance with SABS 1288, 457 and SABS 05.
3. APPLICATION METHODS
TOPRO 94 can be applied to pre-dried or semi-dried timber by pressure impregnation with cold diluted solutions or by diffusion treatment of green timbers using non-pressure dip treatment with heated, concentrated solutions of dissolved product in water.
4. FEATURES / BENEFITS
4.1 Boron Active Ingredient
- Environmentally safe (EPA registered).
- Low mammalian toxicity (non-harmful to human and animals).
- Wide spectrum biological activity (provides protection against decay fungi, wood boring insects and drywood termites).
- Conforms with SABS 871, SABS 1288, SABS 457 and SABS 05.
- International acceptance as a wood preservative compound (list is available on request).
4.2 Treated Timber
- No discolouration and odourlessness of treated timber.
- Total compatibility with glues and paints.
- No effect on wood strength and non-corrosive to ferrous metals.
- Treatment of impermeable timbers and heartwood via the diffusion principle. (Only applicable to diffusion treatment process).
